Bobby Aur Rishi Ki Love Story (2025)
Bobby Aur Rishi Ki Love Story review: This Kunal Kohli rom-com misfires in all departmentsBobby Aur Rishi Ki Love Story review: With dull performances, lackluster writing, it exemplifies how not to create a compelling love story in Hindi cinema.
You just cannot go wrong with a meet-cute love story. Hindi cinema has thrived on countless such films- boy meets girl, sparks fly, there is love, banter, heartbreak, and they come back together again for a kiss. The end. But turns out, things can indeed go wrong in some cases. Horribly wrong. Bobby Aur Rishi Ki Love Story is a shining example of how not to make a romance.
It starts with the director (also the writer here)- Kunal Kohli. He has either lost his touch after the much-loved Hum Tum- or had to direct Bobby Aur Rishi Ki Love Story at gunpoint. Nothing else explains why he has no control over what is happening here. Editors are Sanjay Sankla and Pratul Gaikwad, and two people here couldn't do one job. There is nothing much to work with.
Story: Sparks fly between Bobby (Kaveri Kapur) and Rishi (Vardhaan Puri) in the heart of Cambridge, but life has other plans for them. What happens next forms the crux of the story.
Review: Directed by Kunal Kohli, Bobby Aur Rishi Ki Love Story is another rom-com that explores the dynamic between two individuals who are opposites but come together in an unlikely romance. Kohli, known for his 2004 hit Hum Tum, delivers a modern take on love with this tale of a Gen-Z couple who meet after their flight is grounded in London. They spend 24 hours together, fall in love, but ultimately separate.
At just 97 minutes, the film is a short watch, but the story feels like a missed opportunity. The first half leans heavily on a reimagined version of the song Ladki Kyon from Hum Tum, which, though nostalgic, adds little to the plot. The film revolves around Bobby, who is on a journey from Glasgow to Cardiff but is rerouted to Heathrow. There, she meets Rishi, who follows her and eventually accompanies her to Cambridge. While initially uncomfortable with his presence, the two begin to bond. However, Bobby, scarred from a recent breakup, struggles with commitment, and they part ways. The story picks up two years later when they end up in couples therapy, a device that feels forced and underdeveloped.
