Baby John is a 2024 Indian Hindi-language action thriller film directed by Kalees that serves as a remake of Atlee's 2016 Tamil film Theri. The film stars Varun Dhawan in the title role, alongside Keerthy Suresh (in her first Hindi film), Wamiqa Gabbi, Zara Zyanna and Jackie Shroff. The film follows Satya Verma, a former cop, who is secretly living as John D'Silva to protect his daughter Khushi from Nanaji alias Babbar Sher, Satya's past enemy.
The film was officially announced in July 2023 under the tentative title VD18, and the official title was revealed in February 2024.Principal photography held in Mumbai and Kerala commenced in August 2023 and ended in October 2024. The film has music composed by Thaman S, with cinematography by Kiran Koushik and editing by Ruben.
Baby John was theatrically released on 25 December 2024, coinciding with Christmas, to mixed reviews from critics and bombed at the box office.
Plot
John Desilva is a baker who lives in Kerala with his daughter Khushi and his best friend Jackie. He befriends Khushi’s teacher Tara who eventually develops a crush on him. When Khushi messes with a sex-trafficking gang and goes to police station however an officer mistakes him as dead officer he tells the officer that he is a normal and ordinary man. When they try to kill Khushi, John turns violent when an officer in Kerala, Samba, reminds of his oldself. Tara eventually learns John is actually DCP Satya Verma IPS, he starts explaining his past to her. Jackky who is Head Constable Ram Sevak learns that Tara is in the police force and her real name is Adhira Verman IPS.
Past: After the parents of a girl named Amba file a missing persons report, Satya locks horns with Babbar Sher (also known as Nanaji), a notorious politician whose son Ashwin sexually assaulted Amba to death. Knowing that the court is unable to do anything about Amba’s murder, Satya tortures and kills Ashwin. When Satya tells Babbar that he killed Ashwin, Babbar swears to avenge his son’s murder.
Meanwhile, Satya meets Meera, a doctor from Chennai; the two fall in love. When Satya goes to meet Meera’s family, Babbar sends goons to kill Satya. After the incident, Satya is shamed in the presence of everyone. At Ashwin’s funeral, Babbar is arrested by Satya. Meera meets with Satya and tells him that she wants him to leave the police; however, Satya manages to convince her to let him stay at his job. Satya and Meera marry each other and lead a happy life with their daughter, Khushi.
